Philoptochos

The Ladies' Philoptochos Society is an Orthodox philanthropic women's organization. The name Philoptochos means "friend of the poor" in Greek. Through various fundraisers and donations by the members, this organization contributes to many worthwhile charities, locally, within the Metropolis, nationally and worldwide. In addition to financial support of external organizations, the women of the Philoptochos Society also help their fellow parishioners who are in need due to sickness, suffering or financial crisis. Membership in the Philoptochos is open to all parish women 18 years and older. Annual dues are $35 per year (half of which stays in our local chapter). General meetings are held every other month. The annual bake sale is held in early December each year. This event raises the majority of funds for charitable programs. Social events include a membership luncheon in January, a luncheon in June and a Christmas Tea.

Membership Drive

The Philoptochos Ladies Group held their annual membership luncheon Saturday February 23rd. Vassiliki Montgomery prepared a delicious lunch for the group of 35 ladies and Fr. Peter. Attendees were asked to submit their annual pledge to become a member for 2008. $17 of each donation is sent to the Metropolis and National Philoptochos organizations with the remaining funds staying in the local organization.. President Athena Staviski and Treasurer Evie Dampier reviewed the budget and many worthwhile projects that the women support through the proceeds from the bake sale and other donations. During a one year period, the women donated more than $25,000 to support:

  • individuals in need within our own parish and in the Pensacola community.

  • Annunciation Church with operating costs.

  • charities in the local Pensacola community.

  • clergy education.

  • many special projects sponsored by the Philoptochos at the Metropolis and National level.

The event was also a surprise baby shower for newcomer Carmen Schlemmer who is expecting her first baby in April. Carmen and her husband Carlito are stationed here with the Navy. Membership in Philoptochos is open to all women of the parish 18 years of age and older. To join, please mail a check to the church payable to "Ladies Philoptochos" or give it directly to Evie Dampier, treasurer.  Please include your  name and contact information. Please donate at least $25.
