Daughters of Penelope - Pallas Chapter #34

The Daughters of Penelope  is the women's affiliate organization of the AHEPA Family with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was founded in 1929, in San Francisco. Today, the Daughters of Penelope is a leader in philanthropic, educational and cultural activities with local chapters in the United States, Canada and Greece. The DOP of Pensacola strives to continue to be the leaders in our church dedicated to philanthropic educational and cultural activities.

The Pallas Chapter of the Daughters of Penelope is based in Pensacola, Florida and is affiliated with the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. We are Chapter 34, District 1. DOP promotes the social, ethical and intellectual interests of it members and community. Its members are dedicated to the promotion of Hellenic cultural study, promote citizenship and patriotism for the United States of America, Canada, Greece and Cyprus and other countries in which Chapters exist. We promote and preserve the dissemination of Hellenic cultural and ideals as a contribution to the global civilization.

Each year we sponsor a May Day Glendi - a dinner dance featuring a Greek Band, a full dinner and a silent auction fundraiser. This event promotes Hellenic Culture by providing fellowship opportunities and raises funds to support the church and scholarships for the youth of our parish. The chapter has provided funds for several parish youth to attend Ionian Village, a three week summer camp in Greece sponsored by the Greek Archidiocese of America. Our silent auction proceeds support various charities. Last year's proceeds were donated to the Pensacola Annunciation Church.

For many years, our members have gathered in April to support the American Cancer Relay for Life which is the primary fund raiser for cancer survivors and research. Our members walk the relay and have raised as much as $2000.

Cultural enhancement is encouraged through Greek language lessons every Tuesday for adults and children. Last year our program was fortunate to have a language teacher sponsored by the Greek Ministry of Culture. Every other week, our classes are dedicated to Hellenic culture. Twice a year we sponsor a pasta supper to defray the costs of bringing quality Greek education to our community. We have donated a trunk of Greek history and cultural items that are loaned to schools as part of their history and social studies program. Our Greek School teachers, Mitsa Morres and Vassiliki Montgomery, are shown here in front of our exhibit displayed at the Pensacola Museum of Art.

During our Annual Greek Festival the Daughters support the parish by working many roles to support the festival. We offer our mini-cookbook featuring our Greek cuisine for sale in the Gift Booth.

We are blessed to have many converts who have joined our church. To assist them and our young adults who are coming of age, we have sponsored the sale of Marilyn Rouvelas’ A Guide to Greek Traditions and Customs in America as a reference book that provides the basics of Greek-American living.

Our most precious philanthropic endeavor has been our beloved Penelope House in Mobile, Alabama. The Penelope House is dedicated to the relief of spousal abuse by sheltering female victims and their children. Annually, we contribute funds and at Christmas we provide gifts for all. This year over half the members in our chapter traveled to Mobile to attend a fundraiser for the Penelope House. This event raised more than $50,000 for the charity.

In the Spring we sell Tsoureki Easter bread during Lent. Orders can be picked up on Palm Sunday.

Our meetings are generally held after church on the second Sunday of the month (same day as GOYA and AHEPA meetings). Membership dues are $57 for the first year and $43 per year thereafter. If you would like to join, please come to a meeting.
